The Merseyside-born racer has risen through the ranks at the Eddie Wright Raceway, after starting riding on the mini-track in 2009.
A motocross rider since the age of seven, he saw a televised speedway meeting, and decided to give it a go himself. He quickly took to it and decided to purchase his own 500cc machine. By the end of August Steven had entered his first amateur meeting in which he finished second in the Support Class. This was after his mum, who was undoubtedly nervous, had initially suggested that he might be better in the Novice Class. He returned for the October meeting and won the Support Class before finishing fourth behind Paul Starke, Ashley Birks and Matt Bates in the December Open Class meeting. That form was enough for him to be rewarded with a place in the Saints line-up for 2010 and he was quite a revelation. In just his third competitive meeting he qualified for the British U-21 Final and finished 11th with 5 points and by July he had progressed to the point where he and Gary Irving were sharing a reserve berth with the Scorpions. He rode for both Scunthorpe teams in 2011, averaging 8.95 for the Saints and 4.30 for the Premier League Scorpions. Across the course of the whole season, he scored around 400 points. He also finished a fine runner-up to Tai Woffinden in the 2011 British Under-21 Championship at Lakeside. He also rides for Premier League Newcastle in 2012, where he riders alongside twin brother Richie. |
