Joel started out in British speedway with the Conference League Rye House Raiders in 2003 but, despite impressing, had to wait until the end of April 2004 to get a chance in the Premier League. It was Hull who used him as an early season replacement and the team went on to win the league with Joel averaging 4.79 in league meetings after coming in on an assessed three-point average.

He continued with the Vikings the following season but after their demise the club’s assets were purchased by Sheffield. 2006 saw Sheffield loan Joel out to Newport before he was given a Tigers berth the following season. Despite having to ride in the number five jacket for most of the season he easily surpassed a six-point average for the first time and then took the figure to 7.29 in 2008.

Whilst the point gained in 2008 disappeared in 2009 Joel still averaged well over six and made solid contributions at most tracks. He scored very well at the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2008 and the Scorpions were delighted to snap him up on loan for 2010.
