Gary learnt to ride at the Northside training track in Workington. His father Michael rode for the Comets in 1981.

Gary rode for Cleveland in the Conference Shield in 2006. He impressed at the Scunthorpe Press and Practice day in 2007 but was involved in a serious car crash, and missed the rest of the season.

However, he impressed enough to be given a start for the Saints in 2008.
