Gary, whose father, Michael, rode a few meetings in the second tier for Workington, Glasgow and Long Eaton between 1981 and 1991, learnt to ride at the Northside training track in Workington.
He rode one meeting for Cleveland in the 2006 Conference Shield but was without a team place the following season. Gary impressed at the Scunthorpe Press and Practice day in 2007 but was involved in a serious car crash shortly afterwards and missed the rest of the season. However, after recovering from his injuries he returned to action and impressed enough to be given a place with the Saints in 2008. He was quickly racking up the points and rode in all 18 fixtures that season scoring 147 points at an average of 6.92. By the end of his first season of Conference League speedway Gary was a serious candidate for a reserve berth in the 2009 Scorpions line-up. However, after having some metalwork removed from his leg during the winter Gary's appetite for speedway diminished and he decided to take a break from the sport. That lasted until August when he returned to the Saints line-up for their last four meetings of the season. 2010 saw mixed fortunes for Gary with some impressive performances around the Eddie Wright Raceway for both the Saints and Scorpions but his gating proved his Achilles heel when not allowed the passing opportunities that the EWR provides. Towards the end of the season his gating did improve and he will be hoping to build on that in 2011. |
