The Scorpions' captain starts his third season with the club as undisputed No. 1 at the Eddie Wright Raceway and pledging to become one of the top performers in the Premier League.
By his own admission, the 2010 campaign was something of a disappointment for the Leicester-born rider, whose average slipped to less than nine points a match. An early season crash with Birmingham's Steve Johnston was one of the main reasons, as David rode on despite being less than 100 per cent fit and, with the benefit of hindsight, admitted that he should really have taken time out to fully recover. A silver medal finish in the Premier League Riders' Championship at Sheffield, however, underlined the fact that he is still a highly capable and respected performer at second division level. At the age of 29, he is in the prime of his career, which began in the old Conference League in 1997 with the Peterborough Pumas when he was just 15. He stepped up into the Premier League with Peterborough in 1998 and was a member of the Panthers team that won the league title that year. He moved up into the Elite League with Peterborough in 1999 but is probably best known for his time in Wolverhampton colours, as he joined the West Midlands outfit in 2002 and spent six of the next seven seasons at Monmore Green, the exception being 2006 when he was loaned to Oxford. A former British Under-21 Champion, David also knows what it's like to race at the highest level as he has made three Speedway Grand Prix appearances – in the British GP twice (2003 and 2007) and the Slovenian GP (2003). |
