David started his career with the Peterborough Pumas at the age of fifteen in the Conference League in 1997, scoring a five ride maximum on his debut meeting. He finished the season as an ever-present with an average of over eleven as the Pumas won the League championship.
The following season he was a member of the Peterborough Panthers team which won the Premier League championship, averaging almost eight points, still only aged sixteen. This was to be David's only season in the second tier until joining the Scorpions as the Panthers moved up to the Elite League in 1999, where they won the Elite League Championship, the Knockout Cup and the Craven Shield, with David averaging over five points a meeting. In 2000 David became the British Under-21 Champion and in 2001 he made his debut for the Great Britain national team against Australia. 2002 saw David move to the Wolverhampton Wolves on loan, and averaged over six points as Wolves won the League Championship. The club signing him permanently in 2003 season and he appeared in the British Grand Prix. In 2007, by finishing second in the British Final, David made another appearance at Cardiff but in 2008 Wolves struggled and only avoided relegation to the Premier League by beating Edinburgh in the play-offs. After a disappointing season David decided he wanted to drop down to the Premier League for 2009 and against all odds it was Scunthorpe that he chose. Although expectations were high David started the season well and improved as the year went on. At the season end he was fifth in the league averages with 530 points scored from 49 official meetings with an average of 9.18. Since the end of the season David has repeatedly suggested that riding the Scunthorpe track has transformed him into a real racer, that he is enjoying his racing more than at any time during his career and that he would like to remain with the Scorpions for a very long time.
