Benji first rode a speedway bike around the Sheffield training track as a thirteen-year old before making his Conference League debut for the Newcastle Gems in 2002. His brother, Andre, was already a heat-leader for the club's Premier League side and when Andre returned to ride for the Sheffield Tigers the following season Benji rode for Sheffield's Conference League Prowlers. That season saw his average just under seven whilst he also rode for the Scorpions in second-half mini-meetings at Hull.
2004 and the Prowlers didn’t enter the Conference League leaving Benji to find a new club. He ended up at Buxton but his average dropped by nearly a point as he struggled to get to grips with the tricky Buxton Raceway. However, he was quickly snapped up by the Scorpions as their first ever signing. Over the next three and a half seasons he scored 810 points in 91 meetings for the club in the Conference League and 59 in 17 meetings for the Scorpions when they moved up to the Premier League. He played a major part in the all-conquering Scorpions Conference League campaigns of 2006 and 2007 but became a victim of circumstances when released from the Premier League line-up in 2008. At the time Benji felt his immediate future lay elsewhere and he finished the 2008 season with Redcar in both the Premier League and Conference League. 27th September 2008 is a day that will live long in the memory for Benji as he sensationally won the Conference League Riders’ Championship at Rye House. His form in the closing months of the season was enough for Redcar to reward Benji with one of their Premier League reserve positions for the 2009 season but despite not disgracing himself he was released mid-season and finished the campaign with Weymouth in the National League. With the Saints needing a couple of riders to bolster the top end of their side for 2010 Benji was an obvious candidate and he quickly agreed to rejoin the club when offered the chance.
