Luke comes from a speedway family with father, Mark, and uncles, Gary and Martin, being former racers. However, Luke became a Moto X rider and excelled before travelling from his Mid Wales home to ride on our mini-track in December 2008. Early in 2009 Luke returned with a 500cc bike of his own and after practicing he made his debut in our amateur meetings, finishing third in the Support Class.

Three more Support Class ‘A’ finals followed and then he was given his National League debut when he stood in for the Isle of Wight against Buxton in July. Luke made the jump into the Open Class in September and finished 10th whilst another run out for the Isle of Wight saw him pick up a point. Luke then gave up riding for over two months whilst he built up some money to fund his push for a 2010 National League berth.

There is no doubting Luke’s commitment to making it as a speedway rider and, knowing the importance of our amateur meetings when it came to finding talent for the Saints’ reserve berths, he ended his sabbatical early to ride in our December meeting. After finishing 7th the weather then scuppered his chances of further improvement and in the end has had to settle for starting the season as the Saints’ number eight rider. Two more amateur meetings in March have seen him improve further with a 5th place finish followed by a highly impressive victory in the second.

After looking quick at Press and Practice, Luke was unbeaten in the Stags’ meeting against the Southern Track Riders until an engine failure in heat 15. There is undoubtedly plenty more to come from Luke and we are pleased that despite not winning a National League berth Luke still feels that Scunthorpe is the best place for him to develop.
