Ashley is a former Moto X rider who switched to sliding a speedway bike at the end of last season, after an injury put a stop to his Moto X ambitions. He broke a metatarsal, fractured his left leg and damaged ligaments in his foot and lower leg. After recovery his legs hurt when performing jumps and close friend and former Scorpion, Tai Woffinden, suggested he try speedway.
After enjoying an outing on a speedway bike in 2008 he had another skid at Scunthorpe in September 2009 before entering the club’s amateur meetings. He soon impressed and by December had split Plymouth heat-leader Paul Starke and Mildenhall second-string Matt Bates to finish runner-up in the second round of the Winter Series. Ashley has ridden motorcycles since being able to walk and raced Moto X from the age of 12 or 13. He also regularly rides cycle speedway to keep fit and was British Under-19 Indoor Champion in 2008. He has signed as an asset of the club and will start the 2010 season in one of the Saints’ reserve berths.
