Byron first came to ride in Britain in 2004 and rode seven meetings for Kenny Smith's Newcastle Gems. He opened with 5+1 at Rye House and in his third meeting scored 12+1 at home to Buxton. Those three meetings lead to Newcastle offering him a Premier League contract and with an average of just over five he was invited back for 2005. With the Gems not running the plan was for Byron to ride in the Newcastle second-half but it soon became apparent that he needed Conference League racing and eventually Newcastle allowed Byron to ride for the Scorpions despite them also racing on a Sunday.
Byron made his debut at Sittingbourne and claimed a four ride paid maximum. The following weekend he scored eight on his home debut and five at Newport in two narrow victories and there was no doubt that Byron had significantly strengthened the Scorpions side that had been struggling to win at home prior to his arrival. On three occasions Byron was within one point of a maximum around the Scunthorpe Raceway whilst 8+3 from five rides at Stoke was invaluable in a one-point victory. Byron rode in all 28 meetings that remained during the 2005 season and then rode through the pain barrier on a couple of occasions in 2006 to ensure he was the only ever-present in the side. His 2006 season saw him up his average to 6.67 from all meetings. He collected two maximums at home, against Newport and Weymouth but he made some particularly telling contributions away from home. Early in the season he scored well at Mildenhall (twice) and King’s Lynn (against Boston) but after Byron dropped down to reserve he really came into his own, scoring 8+3 at Cleveland in a 46-45 win, 16+2 at Weymouth (which was arguably his finest meeting for the Scorpions), 7+2 at Buxton, 9+3 at Sittingbourne, 8+4 at Stoke (in another narrow victory) and 16 at King’s Lynn as the Scorpions won the Lincolnshire Cup against Boston over just one leg. It was indeed impressive form that Byron will be hoping to carry forward into his third season with the club. |
